Miscarriage is a devastating complication that unfortunately affects about 15% of pregnancies. Suffering a miscarriage is a sad and distressing occurrence, which can have a long-term psychological impact on both parents. The vast majority of miscarriages are due to abnormal developments of the baby, but can also occur in seemingly healthy pregnancies, where the reasons for miscarriage may not be clear.

Some women sadly experience repeated miscarriages, which can be very traumatic. Don’t lose hope; even suffering recurrent miscarriage does not mean that you will never be able to conceive.

We know that half of all couples affected have an underlying cause for miscarriage, particularly recurrent miscarriage, and the vast majority can be treated to improve the outcome of future pregnancies.

We therefore provide a full screening service that includes:

  • Outpatient consultations and ultrasound scans
  • Full hormonal screen
  • Testing for inherited and acquired thrombophilias
  • Testing maternal and paternal chromosomal Karyotypes
  • Outpatient Hydrosonography

We look at the potential underlying causes, whilst prioritising your emotional welfare at this time.

Miscarriage treatment depends on the reasons for miscarriage occurring, and the woman/couple involved.

Treatments may include:

  • Aspirin and Heparin in early pregnancy
  • Hormonal interventions in early pregnancy
  • Laparoscopic cervical cerclage in between pregnancies

It is important to have a support system in place when undergoing miscarriage treatment. In addition to encouraging you to talk to your partner, we offer professional counselling, to help you to come to terms with your loss and throughout the process of trying to conceive.
